With Bayern away last on the bill for CSKA, they are the side definitely more in need of the win as a draw for Roma would probably please boss Rudi Garcia ahead of their home clash with Manchester City on match day six, where a further point could be enough depending on how other results play out. Roma’s winning streak came to a crashing halt with a home defeat against SPAL. The international break has clearly affected the club’s momentum and Eusebio Di Francesco’s men have to wake up soon in order to remain in contention for the top spot in Group G. CSKA Moscow are unbeaten in the two group games and the home victory over Real Madrid has placed them as the unlikely leaders in the group. Viktor Goncharenko will be aware about CSKA’s humiliating 5-1 defeat against Roma in their last visit to the Stadio Olimpico, but the upcoming contest is likely to be much closer. The loss against SPAL may infuse a hunger for three points within Roma, who are my pick for a victory.

CSKA Moscow have been really surprising in the Champions League so far, as they are actually leading a group that also features Roma, Real Madrid and Plzen. They will now have a tough time staying at the top tough, as they will be hosted by Roma on Tuesday.

Roma (1-1-0) struggled a lot in the season overall, and in that span they met a bad 0-3 loss on the road against Real Madrid. But Roma found their form and among other matches, they blasted Plzen by 0-5 at home. Last season they made a great run but fell in the semi-finals against Liverpool. They won all three home matches in the knock-out rounds, and five of their six overall. Roma have been great against Russian clubs overall (6-1-1), and have only lost to CSKA Moscow in four home matches (3-1-0).

Roma have a number of injury concerns, with Aleksandar Kolarov and Daniele de Rossi already ruled out before Rick Karsdorp, Patrik Schick and Diego Perotti joined the injury list last week. Javier Pastore is fit again though, while of the others De Rossi and Kolarov have played regularly this season.

After six games without a win – including defeat to Real Madrid in the opening Champions League group game – Roma had won their last four in a row before the 2-0 loss at home to SPAL at the weekend. Those wins included a 3-1 derby triumph against Lazio thanks to Lorenzo Pellegrini, Aleksandar Kolarov and Federico Fazio’s goals, before Edin Dzeko scored a hat-trick and Cengiz Under and Justin Kluivert netted the others in the 5-0 Champions League defeat of Viktoria Plzen. Steven Nzonzi and Edin Dzeko then scored in a 2-0 win at Empoli before the surprise defeat last time out.
