Barclona play their third match in this season’s Champions League on Wednesday evening and the Blaugrana are preparing for the game against Inter Milan without Lionel Messi.
The Barca captain fractured his elbow at the weekend against Sevilla and his absence is naturally a big blow for the Spanish champions.
Inter, meanwhile, head the Camp Nou on a run of seven successive wins in all competitions, the most recent of which came on Sunday night in the derby against Milan.
With Messi missing, Ousmane Dembele is likely to come into a front three alongside Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez. Centre-back Samuel Umititi is also out with Clement Lenglet set to continue alongside Gerard Pique in the heart of defence.
Inter will be missing midfielder Radja Nainggolan after he picked up an ankle problem in the win over Milan. Marcelo Brozovic and Ivan Perisic also picked up knocks in that game and it remains to see whether they will be fully fit.
Inter’s derby victory on Sunday came with another late goal and during their run of seven straight wins, Luciano Spalleti’s side have claimed victory in injury time on three occasions.
Two further wins have been achieved via winners in the 77th and 78th minutes and the Nerrazzuri have been grinding out results even when they have not been at their best. After a very solid performance and a great victory to reclaim the top of La Liga against Sevilla was spoiled by an injury to Lionel Messi, Barcelona now start a three-week life without the best player of all time, and the first two games will be real tests. There’s El Clásico on Sunday, and it doesn’t matter how good or bad Real Madrid are playing. That will be a crazy tough game, especially without Messi.
Before that there’s Inter Milan in the Champions League, a matchup between the two perfect leaders of Group B. They’ll face each other twice in a row, which will most likely determine the winner of the group. Inter are on fire, winning seven consecutive games in Italy and Europe and having just beaten their biggest rivals, AC Milan, with a last-minute goal on Sunday.Barca followed up their straightforward 4-0 win over PSV Eindhoven on the opening matchday with a 4-2 triumph away at Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.
Lionel Messi netted a hat-trick in the first of those victories and then pulled the strings throughout at Wembley Stadium as Barca maintained their perfect start in Group B.
Devoid of their main creative talent for the next few weeks, however, with a fractured arm keeping Messi on the sidelines during a run of key games at home and on the continent, Barca’s other star names must now step up.
Next weekend’s La Liga showdown with Real Madrid can wait for now, as the Catalan giants are not quite over the line yet in Europe, knowing that defeat to Inter will give Spurs and PSV – who face off on the same night – a big chance to close the gap.
