Atalanta won both of their matches against Chievo last season.  In this fixture back in January, Chievo was crushed 1-4.  In the reverse fixture in May, Atalanta won 1-0.  That was Atalanta’s third win in a row over Chievo, and they have lost just once in their last six against them.  Despite that record, Chievo looks due in this match.  With all of the strain of playing in Europe for the first time, some drop off is going to be natural.  However, Alejandro Gomez is involved and he had three goals last season against Chievo, so that looks a good wager.

After getting a win on the first day of the season, Chievo knew that their next two fixtures would be very tough. The fact they got three points from their first match against Udinese, 1-2 away, means that they were able to play a little more freely in those matches afterward. They lost 1-2 at home to Lazio, a result that was not all too bad considering what we know the Rome side is capable of doing. But that didn’t help them much last Saturday against mighty Juventus. Juve went ahead in the 17th minute through Perparim Hetemaj’s own goal. They then got their second from Gonzalo Higuain two minutes before the hour. The points were truly headed to Juve when they got a third through Paulo Dybala’s 83rd-minute strike.

Atalanta is going to have to be at their very best in the next couple of months if they are to once again challenge for a top six place in Serie A. After doing so well last season, they have been given the poisoned chalice of Europa League football.  How they deal with it could well determine their season. In Serie A, they started slow thanks to a 0-1 home loss to Roma and a 3-1 loss away to Napoli in their first two matches. Those weren’t surprises really, and they weren’t horrible in either. They got their first win on Sunday over Sassuolo 2-1. They had trailed for seven minutes due to Stefano Sensi’s goal, but Andreas Cornelius had knotted it up in the 35th to alleviate the danger. With just 13 minutes left to play, they got their winner via Andrea Petagna. On Thursday, they hosted Everton in the Europa League, and they won 3-0. Andrea Masiello, Alejandro Gomez, and Bryan Cristante each found the back of the net in the first half to give them a commanding lead in which they would hold for the rest of the night.
