And with the return leg against the Serbian champions to come next, the Merseyside club have the chance to give themselves clear daylight in the group.
The Reds also sit top of the Premier League, along with Manchester City, in what has been a solid start to the campaign. And Burley believes that they could have their Champions League group sewn up before their final game with Napoli.
“It’s hard to see how they don’t get another three points against Red Star,” he told ESPN FC.
“That means they would be in a commanding position on nine points and if they are left with having to go to PSG, they know they can, or if they have to beat Napoli at home, they know they can, but they probably won’t have to do either because those two are going to drop points.
“If Liverpool are to top this group and potentially knock out PSG and remain top of the Premier League, there is no better start to the season than that.”
Indeed, when the groups were drawn, many called Liverpool’s the most difficult one to get out of.
PSG and Napoli have squads capable of beating anyone on their day, while Liverpool themselves reached the Champions League final last season.
It was predicted that Red Star would be the group whipping boys and that has been the case.
Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman agreed that the Reds should be fine in Group C.
“They should bet Belgrade away and they should qualify. You then fancy them against Napoli and PSG to get something,” he said.
ESPN FC pundit Gabriele Marcotti added that while they have made it good start in the group, Liverpool must not take their foot off the gas.
“I think its really important to finish top of the group,” he said.
The Reds travel to Belgrade to play Red Star in two weeks, followed by a trip to play PSG and finally a home game with Napoli.
