Lyon have only lost one of their last seven games in all competitions and did well to bounce back at the weekend against Nimes after being thrashed 5-0 by PSG the game prior. They beat the newly-promoted Crocodiles 2-0 with Moussa Dembele getting another goal to continue his hot streak since joining from Celtic. It was a very professional performance from the Olympians who are partial to failing in the easy games, with perfect examples being their 1-0 losses to Nice and Reims in August. They dispatched of Nimes in solid fashion at the Groupama and this has set them up for a good brawl with Hoffenheim.
They could have easily been going into this game off the back of a heavy loss after their 5-0 trouncing at the hands of Paris before the international break, but this simple win could really work wonders for their confidence ahead of this massive game. Lyon were touted to finish second in this group behind City, but a win here could set the Olympians on their way to a top of the table finish despite it only being half way through the group fixtures.
Apart from their heavy loss at the Stade des Princes, which can really happen to any team when PSG are on-form, Lyon have been pretty good on the road recently with that defeat being the only blemish of their last four away matches. They drew 2-2 with a sturdy Caen side in September; this was a match that Nabil Fekir said was a great learning experience and it showed in their following away game to City as they were emphatic in their 2-1 win. They won the next away game after that as well with a 3-0 beating of Dijon. Lyon should be really looking forward to this game as they are in good form and definitely have the tools to rip this Hoffenheim side apart with Memphis, Traore, Fekir and the reborn Dembele all lethal on their day.
Hoffenheim got a much-needed win at the weekend over Nurnberg (3-1) as Die Kraichgauer have been so unfortunate in recent weeks. Before the Nurnberg win, Hoffenheim had lost each of the previous three matches 2-1. Coming up against Manchester City and Leipzig, they played really well in these games despite having the odds stacked in the opposition’s favour. These defences are sturdy so they did well to score against them but Hoffenheim just couldn’t hold on to get anything from the matches. Against Frankfurt, a team more equally suited to their level, they probably should have done better but still pushed their opponents to the edge.
The win against Nurnberg was crucial to get them back on track; it allowed Adam Szalai and Reiss Nelson to get some goals and Julien Nagelsmann will hope that this can set them back on the goals trail. Hoffenheim’s home form could be something that holds them back in this match though. They’ve lost three and drawn one of their last four matches at the Wirsol Rhein-Neckar-Arena but will have to get the bit between their teeth and improve for this massive European clash. Hoffenheim finished 3rd last season in the Bundesliga and do have the personnel to go far in this competition but their home form should probably be the killer for them here.
Hoffenheim have been too poor at home recently for us to expect them to get a positive result and with Lyon great on the road, we’re expecting a French win in this match. Both teams have scored in all 11 of Hoffenheim’s games this season with Lyon also seeing lots of goals as 25 have been scored in their last eight. Lyon are currently top of the group for a reason and with them coming up such a defensively weak side, we’re going to back a 2-1 win for them.
