It’s certainly not been the ideal start to the season for Mauricio Pocchettino’s men though. They started with three wins on the trot, but a 2-1 loss at Vicarage Road put a swift end to this perfect start. Their new stadium opening was delayed, leaving them to host Liverpool at Wembley in a match they also lost 2-1. A late collapse in Italy saw them lose at Inter Milan too, and they now travel to Milton Keynes to face Watford in this EFL Cup clash.

There are plenty of theories for just why Tottenham have failed to hit the heights this season, but their hard-fought win at Brighton will definitely put some morale back into the camp. Wednesday could see a few rotations made, but at least some of the big guns are likely to be present at the Stadium mk.

Watford’s 2-1 win over Spurs earlier this month continued their surprising perfect start to the season and made it five wins in a row in all competitions, but their return from the international break saw their fortunes turn.

The Hornets lost 2-1 at home to an out of form Manchester United side, and this weekend they followed that with a draw at Fulham after disappointingly letting the newly promoted Cottagers get back into the game with just 12 minutes remaining. Now, they face a potential spell without the talismanic Troy Deeney at the spearhead of their attack after the striker revealed that he’s been playing with broken bones in his foot for the past couple of weeks.

We’re still likely to see a strong squad selection from both managers though, with maybe a few rotational changes in the Spurs camp to cope with the demands of Champions League football as well.

What we can be fairly certain of is a couple of goals or more. Tottenham have looked uncharacteristically weak at the back this season, and the fact that both Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm are injured now is a real blow. Spurs have looked so weak, in fact, that they have only kept one clean sheet in their seven matches so far. This was in their shock 3-0 win at Manchester United, although even in that game they could have easily conceded a few goals in the first half alone.

Watford have improved at the back under Javi Gracia, but the visitors have still kept just two clean sheets in their seven outings so far, and one of those was against Reading in the last round of the League Cup. Both Spurs and Watford have scored in every one of their matches so far, so backing Both Teams to Score here along with a narrow 2-1 win for Spurs looks a great choice.
